Proterra has announced that its Onyx modular battery platform will be available with a US-sourced cell option, with shipments beginning Q1 2027. Orders are open now.
The move is a response to tightening Buy America and Build America, Buy America (BABA) procurement requirements and growing OEM demand for domestic content assurance amid an uncertain geopolitical environment for battery materials. Proterra says the broader onshoring effort—including the US cell option plus additional sourcing changes to pack components and internal subsystems—will increase American content in the Onyx platform by over 600%. The baseline for that figure wasn’t disclosed.
Proterra manufactures battery packs at its facility in Greer, South Carolina, and operates a technology center in Burlingame, California. The Onyx platform is aimed at commercial vehicle and heavy-duty equipment OEMs. The company didn’t identify which US cell manufacturer it’s sourcing from.
“The market is asking for greater supply chain certainty and stronger domestic content. We’re answering,” said Chris Bailey, CEO of Proterra.
