Orange EV, a manufacturer of electric Class 8 terminal trucks, has announced it had received an order for 600 trucks—the largest single order in the firm’s history.
Terminal trucks, also referred to as terminal tractors, as well as by several more colorful names including yard trucks, yard dogs, yard mules and, in the UK, terminal lorries, are semi-tractor vehicles designed to move semi-trailers within a warehouse facility, cargo yard or intermodal facility.
The company said it expects to deliver the order, which it called “an inflection point for yard electrification,” in full by the end of the current year.
Orange delivered its first truck in 2015. Since then, it has deployed more than 1,900 trucks in over 40 US states and four Canadian provinces. This latest order will increase the size of its deployed fleet by 32% alone. Orange has previously said it is “the most proven and widely adopted heavy-duty EV in North America.”
Orange said it currently has an order book of around 1,400 yard trucks. Recent expansions to its Kansas City factory will allow the company to produce as many as 2,400 trucks per year without additions to its assembly line.
“We have left the early adopter stage of yard electrification,” said Orange co-founder and President Kurt Neutgens, adding that the company is seeing customers “invest in hundreds of trucks because total cost of ownership superiority has been proven, including uptime, reliability, fuel savings and service guarantees.”
