Knowles releases X1/Y2 safety-certified MLCCs in 3825 case for EV power filtering

Knowles has extended its X1/Y2 safety-certified MLCC line with a new 3825 case size, offering capacitance values from 1 nF to 18 nF, voltage ratings from 310 VAC to 660 VAC depending on part selection, and a minimum 7 mm creepage distance for high-voltage isolation in compact PCB layouts.

The parts are rated for 1500 Vdc and qualified to Humidity Grade IIIB—85°C and 85% relative humidity for 1,000 hours—covering the moisture exposure conditions typical of underhood and industrial enclosure environments. They carry AEC-Q200 qualification with flexible terminations designed to handle mechanical flexure and thermal shock across -55 °C to +125 °C. The 3825 case adds to Knowles’ existing safety-certified MLCC portfolio, which covers a range of X1/Y2 configurations for AC and DC line filtering and interference suppression.

X1/Y2-rated capacitors sit across the AC mains line in power conversion circuits, where they filter conducted EMI while providing a defined failure mode—open rather than short—that protects against shock hazard. In EV onboard chargers and DC/DC converters, the combination of high capacitance, AEC-Q200 qualification and certified creepage distance in a surface-mount package reduces the need for larger through-hole safety capacitors and simplifies board layout.

“These new X1/Y2 surface-mount MLCCs enable designers to meet stringent insulation and surge testing requirements while supporting miniaturization trends across EV power electronics and industrial energy systems,” said Nan Zhang, Director and Product Line Manager for Ceramic Capacitors at Knowles.
