Littelfuse unveils new thyristor product line with 3 kA of surge protection

Circuit protection manufacturer Littelfuse has introduced a new thyristor product line, which is designed to safeguard exposed surfaces such as RS-485 data interfaces and AC/DC power supplies in factory automation systems, energy storage systems, power distribution grids and EV charging systems.

The Pxxx0S3N SIDACtor Protection Thyristor is housed in a DO-214AB (SMC) package, and supplies 3 kA (8/20) of surge protection and low-thermal buildup during long-term overvoltage events. The company says it is “the first DO-214AB (SMC) sized product on the market capable of withstanding 3 kA (8/20) surges.”

Compared to Metal Oxide Varistors (MOV) and Transient Voltage Suppressor diodes (TVS), the company says its Pxxx0S3N SIDACtor Protection Thyristor has lower on-state voltage. Also, Littelfuse says its thyristor has a lower switching voltage compared to gas discharge tubes.

“Compared to MOVs and TVS diodes, the Pxxx0S3N SIDACtor is significantly smaller, and it is the first product of its size to provide such high-surge current protection in such a small package,” said Ben Huang, Senior Product Marketing Manager for Protection Semiconductor Business at Littelfuse.
