Scania moves cautiously to expand electric truck production capacity in Europe

Truck manufacturer Scania plans to invest 70 million euros in its production site in Angers, France, to expand its capacity for electric truck production. The investment includes an extension of the existing facility and the adaptation of assembly lines for electric truck production.

Scania’s Angers facility, in operation for more than three decades, serves customers in France and across Europe.

The company appears to be moving very cautiously into the electric future. “We are preparing for the future, but we must remain able to adapt to changing volumes and market dynamics,” said Petrus Sundvall, President of Scania Production Angers. “The site will be capable of assembling both combustion-engine and electric trucks, ensuring [that] we can respond to evolving customer demand.”

“The transition to electrified transport is not only about vehicles,” said Christian Levin, President and CEO of Scania. “Scania is investing to support this transition, but lasting progress will depend on how quickly the entire transport ecosystem can move forward together. Europe has set ambitious targets for reducing emissions from transport. Achieving those ambitions will require coordinated action across the entire value chain. Transport operators need the confidence to invest, infrastructure needs to be deployed at scale and regulatory frameworks must support long-term planning. This investment demonstrates Scania’s commitment to contributing to that transition.”

Scania’s parent company Traton recently joined Daimler Truck and Volvo Group to file a motion to defend the Trump EPA’s repeal of the 2009 endangerment finding and the repeal of all motor vehicle climate standards. Scania has also lobbied the European Union to water down emissions rules designed to encourage production of electric trucks.
