Since beginning operations in 2022, Slate Auto has made lots of headlines for its plan to offer a low-cost electric pickup truck. Now the company has won a $5-million Michigan Business Development Program performance-based grant to expand its North American headquarters in Troy, Michigan.
Between its HQ in Troy and a recently-opened facility in Sterling Heights, the company currently employs 325 people in Michigan. The new project will have a total capital investment of $10.4 million, and Slate expects it to create at least 392 new jobs, including corporate, engineering and design positions, over the next five years.
Slate says it has received more than 150,000 reservations for its electric pickup truck, and hopes to begin deliveries in late 2026.
“We thank Governor Whitmer and the Michigan Economic Development Corporation for supporting Slate’s growth in Michigan and acknowledging the importance of developing and producing affordable vehicles,” said Peter Faricy, CEO of Slate Auto. “Slate will benefit from the talent pool and automotive ecosystem in Michigan.”
