Chevy Springo EV to go on sale in China

The Springo is a renamed electric version of the Sail, which is produced by Shanghai GM, a joint venture between GM and Chinese partner SAIC.

GM will unveil its new Chevrolet Springo EV at the Guangzhou Auto Show in November, according to the Chinese news site auto.ifeng.com (via Indian Autos blog). The Springo is a renamed electric version of the Sail, which is produced by Shanghai GM, a joint venture between GM and Chinese partner SAIC. The company presented a prototype of the electric Sail in December 2010.

The Springo EV is scheduled to go on sale in China in early 2013, and will not be sold in the US. However, American buyers will be offered the Chevrolet Spark EV, which closely resembles the Springo, around the same time.

The Springo features a 22 kWh lithium-ion battery pack and a 65 kW electric motor that drives the front wheels and produces torque of 220 N-m (162 lb-ft). It’s expected to have a maximum speed of 80 mph (130 km/h) and a range of 93 miles (150 km).
