Stellantis to display several new EVs at CES in January

Stellantis, which manufactures cars under no less than 14 separate brands, will be showing off several new plug-in models at CES 2022 in Las Vegas, on January 5-8.

“Electrification, with our 30 electrified models available including fuel cell vans, connectivity and autonomy are all important facets of [the] future, but each cannot stand alone,” said Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares. “Our creativity, engineering and innovative partnerships are accelerating our drive to build the best and most sustainable mobility for our customers.”

Even as Mr. Tavares warns politicos that the transition to EVs will be “beyond the limits” of what the auto industry can sustain, (unless it receives generous government subsidies), his company is forging ahead with electrification on multiple fronts.

At its EV Day event last July, Stellantis announced over €30 billion of investments in electrification and software through 2025. Stellantis is wisely beginning to build an EV supply chain for the future. In 2021, the company signed partnership deals with: battery-makers ACC, LG and Samsung; solid-state battery developer Factorial Energy; electronics manufacturer Foxconn; and Europe lithium supplier Vulcan Energy.

Some of the new plug-in vehicles Stellantis will be touting at CES:

  • The Citroën Ami is an “ultra-compact and agile urban mobility solution” aimed at young drivers. It’s a two-seater, only 2.41 meters long, with a top speed of 45 kph (28 mph), and a range of 70 km (43 miles). It’s “customizable with a large set of accessories and stickers.” Sounds sick, brah!
  • The Fiat 500 has been an icon for decades in Europe, where some jokingly call it “the Italian backpack.” In the US, it became something of a symbol of Big Auto’s refusal to electrify. Fiat grudgingly produced an electric model in 2013—reviewers loved it, but Fiat’s then-CEO hated it, and publicly asked drivers not to buy it. Now Stellantis will present a new electric version that offers a range of 320 km (on the WLTP testing cycle) and standard 85 kW fast charging. The new 500 features Assisted Driving Level 2, and is available with 3 different bodies: hatchback, cabrio and 3+1.
  • The Jeep Wrangler 4xe is a PHEV with 21 miles of electric range, 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. It’s now available in Europe, China and the US.
  • The all-new 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe will offer a PHEV variant with an estimated 25 miles of electric range, 375 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. Jeep plans to offer a pure EV in every SUV segment by 2025.
  • The new DS E-TENSE FE21 will be racing in season 8 of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. The 1,984-pound racecar sports a 900-volt system that includes a 52 kWh battery pack and a 338 hp motor. The lightweight design combined with electric torque drives the car from 0-60 mph in about 2.8 seconds. At racing pace, it has a range of up to 60 miles. Drivers Jean-Eric Vergne and António Félix da Costa are hoping to win a third double title for the DS-Techeetah team.
  • The Jeep Magneto is a concept vehicle with an axial flux electric motor that operates at up to 6,000 rpm. The e-motor is connected to a six-speed manual transmission, and delivers up to 273 lb-ft of torque and 285 hp. It’s powered by a 70 kWh, 800-volt four-battery system.
