Nidec to acquire Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Machine Tool to support EV drive manufacturing

Nidec, a producer of motor application products based on “everything that spins and moves,” plans to acquire Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Machine Tool. Nidec has been engaged in the manufacture of reduction gearboxes and pressing machines through its subsidiary Nidec-Shimpo. After completion of the acquisition, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Machine Tool will become Nidec-Shimpo’s third main business.

Nidec intends to use the acquired technology for its future insourcing plan, expecting increased demand for its E-Axle integrated motor system, which combines a traction motor, a gearbox and an inverter.

In May 2020, Geely announced that its new Geometry C EV will be driven by Nidec’s 150 kW E-Axle model Ni150Ex. The Ni150Ex is based on the company’s first mass-produced E-Axle traction motor system, which entered production in 2019.

In addition to the Ni150Ex, Nidec has also developed four other models: Ni200Ex (200 kW), Ni100Ex (100 kW), Ni70Ex (70 kW) and Ni50Ex (50 kW). Cars that use a front+rear dual motor configuration can deliver up to 400 kW of power by combining two Nidec E-Axles.
