The German firm Kerstner will unveil a refrigerator van version of the Mercedes-Benz Vito E-Cell electric vehicle at the Solutrans trade show in Lyon, France, this week. Kerstner, based near Frankfurt, has been building air-conditioning and cooling systems for 20 years.
The Vito E-Cell is based on the popular Vito gas-powered panel van. The 36-kWh lithium-ion battery pack is located under the floor, for maximum cargo space. The E-Cell has a payload of 850 kg and a range of around 130 km. Mercedes will produce 2000 Vito E-Cells this year at their factory in Spain.
Kerstner’s delivery van features a flat refrigerator unit on the roof, which is powered by a separate lithium-ion battery and a separate charging system. The cooling battery can keep the wurst and kraut cool for 6-10 hours on a full charge, completely independently of the van’s main battery.
