Hyliion claims 1,000 pre-orders for its CNG hybrid Class 8 truck

Hyliion, a developer of electrified powertrain solutions for Class 8 commercial vehicles, has launched a new natural-gas series-hybrid electric powertrain.

The Hypertruck Electric Range Extender (ERX) combines an electric drivetrain with a natural gas-powered onboard generator. It delivers 25 miles of electric range. Hyliion says it can also produce electricity locally at roughly 30% less than the average grid cost.

Continuing Hyliion’s long-standing relationship with Dana, the Hypertruck ERX will feature Dana’s electric motor, inverter and axle technologies. Dana will also provide manufacturing capabilities to support Hyliion in achieving full volume production.

The launch of the ERX is anchored by a pre-order of up to 1,000 trucks from logistics firm Agility. Fleet demonstration vehicles have already been allocated to customers for delivery in 2021, and volume shipments are scheduled to begin in 2022.
