GBA launches second wave of Battery Passport pilots

The Global Battery Alliance has announced the second wave of its Battery Passport pilot program.

The GBA is a consortium led by battery manufacturers, including CALB Group, Contemporary Amperex Technology, EVE Energy, Farasis Energy, FinDreams Battery, LG Energy Solutions, Samsung SDI and Sunwoda. These companies’ products comprise some 80% of global EV battery market share.

The organization, which is charged with establishing a sustainable and responsible battery value chain, follows three guiding principles:

  • Establish a circular battery value chain as a major driver to achieve the Paris Agreement;
  • Establish a low-carbon economy in the value chain to create new jobs and additional economic value;
  • Safeguard human rights and economic development in a manner consistent with the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The GBA’s Battery Passports are intended to be “a framework to increase transparency across the battery value chain,” and the pilot programs, the organization said, “send a powerful message about the potential to scale a sustainable battery value chain.”

The passports will establish “a digital twin of the physical battery that conveys information about all applicable sustainability and lifecycle requirements based on a comprehensive definition of a sustainable battery,” the group’s web site states, just as a person’s passport can show where the traveler has been by means of passport stamps.

The organization “seeks to contribute to building a marketplace where products compete on independently-validated and verifiable sustainability performance,” GBA officials said.
