ABB unveils mobile charger for Formula E Season 9

ABB will be expanding its partnership with the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship as the electric racing series enters its ninth season. The global electronics giant will now be the official charging supplier for Formula E. It will also introduce a portable solution for charging the new Gen3 cars before races and between sessions.

The ABB Formula E Race Charger has been designed to be easily transported and installed around the world, and to use a wide variety of power sources. Each charger can deliver a maximum power of 160 kW and is able to charge two vehicles with 80 kW of power simultaneously, before the race. This allows race teams to significantly reduce the charger footprint and decrease emissions, as there is no longer a need for one unit per car.

“We’re delighted to bring our innovative charging solutions to the biggest global e-mobility stage, continuing our drive to use [Formula E] as a test bed for new, more sustainable technologies,” said Frank Mühlon, CEO of ABB E-mobility. “Charging the Gen3 cars will give us valuable testing information on charging in a high-paced, competitive environment. The experience and knowledge we gain will be used to continuously improve ABB chargers for customer and consumer use.”

“Technical progress and sustainable innovation are cornerstones of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship,” said Jamie Reigle, CEO of Formula E. “Our partnership with ABB is based on a shared commitment to advance electric mobility. ABB’s mobile chargers set the industry standard and will serve as critical infrastructure [for] the championship.”
