NRG eVgo unveils US dual-standard charging station

Well shucks, it looks like there’s not going to be a war after all – EVSE manufacturers and providers are simply sidestepping the SAE-vs-CHAdeMO issue by installing charging spots that support both standards. NRG eVgo has installed what it says is the first dual-standard charging station in the US at San Diego’s largest mall.

The Freedom Station at Fashion Valley features both SAE Combo and CHAdeMO DC fast charge connectors, as well as AC J1772 Level 2 charging.

“California accounts for one-third of all electric vehicle sales in the US. The NRG eVgo Freedom Station at Fashion Valley gives California drivers freedom to go anywhere they want in the coolest cars on the road and at lower prices than gasoline cars,” said NRG eVgo Vice President Terry O’Day. “With charging options at your home, apartments and work combined with on-the-go charging, our mission is to make it even easier to choose to drive an electric car.”

eVgo is building a network of Freedom Station sites across the San Francisco Bay, San Joaquin Valley, Los Angeles Basin and San Diego areas. All include 240 volt  Level 2 chargers, and are wired for the addition of a second DC charger. Most sites are open 24/7 and are located near retail stores and restaurants.
