Vision Marine files patent application for electronically controlled reverse thrust in electric outboards

Vision Marine Technologies has filed its 16th US patent application, covering an electronic reverse-thrust architecture for its E-Motion electric marine outboard platform. The application addresses directional control via motor reversal rather than the mechanical shifting systems used in conventional combustion outboards.

Unlike a combustion engine, an electric motor can reverse rotation electronically, eliminating the mechanical gear mechanism that typically handles forward/reverse switching. Vision Marine’s application outlines how to implement this while retaining compatibility with existing lower-unit marine architectures—meaning the approach is intended to be integrable without redesigning the entire drivetrain.

The company says the design reduces moving components and simplifies integration for manufacturers and service providers.

Vision Marine (NASDAQ: VMAR) is based in Boisbriand, Quebec, and operates marine dealerships through its Nautical Ventures network in Florida.
