Just under a year after breaking ground in Casa Grande, Arizona, Lucid Motors has finished construction of its first EV factory, and has begun the commissioning process. Lucid says its new facility, dubbed Lucid AMP-1 (Advanced Manufacturing Plant), is the first greenfield, dedicated EV factory to be built in North America.
This spring, the new plant will start producing the Lucid Air electric luxury sedan. The 590-acre site has room for expansion, and the next phase of construction is expected to begin in 2021, with the aim of enabling production of the company’s next vehicle, Project Gravity, an electric SUV.
The all-new manufacturing system at AMP-1 embraces innovative processes, such as an aircraft-inspired riveted and bonded monocoque body structure that replaces spot welds, giving the Lucid Air state-of-the-art structural efficiency.
As Lucid rolls out the first Air models this spring, AMP-1 will have a capacity of 30,000 units per year. In its final form, the factory will be able to produce up to 400,000 units per year. Production will begin with the Lucid Air Dream Edition, followed by Grand Touring and Touring models, and finally the Lucid Air Pure, which will join the lineup in early 2022.
