The English automotive clean tech firm AVID Technology has signed a deal with GKN Hybrid Power to develop and manufacture electric motors. AVID will take over the existing EVO motors, and develop EVO technology to deliver new variants of the motor.
According to the companies, the EVO motor’s high power density, ability to run at speeds that remove the need for a gearbox, and flat configuration enable in-wheel designs, and allow it to operate in confined spaces.
AVID’s core business is the electrification and control of engine ancillaries, thermal management systems and hybrid systems, including pumps and fans. Customers include manufacturers of heavy-duty and high-performance electric, hybrid and fuel cell vehicle powertrains.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for us to bring our expertise and strong technical capabilities to meet real market and environmental demands,” said AVID Managing Director Ryan Maughan. “We see huge potential utilizing this technology in our key markets of heavy-duty and high-performance vehicles, as well as some exciting new market applications we have in development.”
“The EVO axial flux motor technology remains leading-edge with a growing target market,” said Gordon Day, General Manager of GKN Hybrid Power. “In AVID, a young and ambitious UK firm which is also focused on clean energy technology, we have a great partner to further develop the EVO motor and bring the system into regular production.”
