OXIS Energy to establish plant in Wales for mass production of Li-S cells

Oxford-based OXIS Energy has announced it will establish a manufacturing plant for the production of electrolyte and cathode active material specifically for the mass production of lithium-sulfur cells.

OXIS will produce the electrolyte and cathode active material at the plant, which is currently at Manufacturing Readiness Level (MRL) 8. Oxis will build the plant at the Kenfig Industrial Estate in Wales. The company has signed a 15-year lease to develop the plant. The company hopes to create several hundred jobs within the next ten years.

The Wales-based plant will supply OXIS Energy’s planned manufacturing plant in Brazil, which is a partnership between the local Minas Gerais government and OXIS. OXIS says it will retain its R&D activity in the UK, but will collaborate with Codemig, a state-owned company in Minas Gerais, to jointly exploit lithium rock deposits for the production of lithium metal, which OXIS uses for its Li-S cells.

The battery company plans to produce millions of units of the active material in its Wales factory from 2020 to 2030.

OXIS Energy CEO Huw Hampson-Jones said, “With support from both the State Government of Minas Gerais and the Welsh Government, including the investment made by the Development Bank of Wales, OXIS is working towards the commercialization of mass production of lithium-sulfur cells for electric batteries in order to address our target markets – aviation, marine and buses and trucks.”
