EnPower to open Indianapolis battery facility in 2022

US-based battery cell manufacturer EnPower is planning to open a customer qualification facility for batteries in Indianapolis in 2022. The company plans to produce batteries with its proprietary multilayer anodes at the facility.

“A customer qualification facility is critical to scale production, optimize cell geometries, complete comprehensive cell testing and secure sales agreements,” said EnPower VP of Operations and Manufacturing Earl Wiggins.

EnPower bought a pouch cell manufacturing line from EnerDel for the facility, which includes production and testing capabilities. On the production side, the facility has a 20,000-square-foot dry room, two coating lines and four pouch cell lines. The company says the coating lines can produce more than two million square meters of electrodes per year. For testing, the facility has analytical and reliability testing equipment as well as cycling channels.

EnPower plans to produce the first qualification samples at the facility in the first half of 2022. The company also plans to add assembly lines and upgrade the facility to enlarge its manufacturing capacity and product range to include batteries of up to 800 MWh by the end of 2023.
