Irizar to deliver 19 electric buses to Madrid and Barcelona

Bus manufacturer Irizar, based in Ormaiztegi, in the Basque region of Spain, has won a contract to supply fifteen electric buses to Madrid and four electric articulated buses to Barcelona.

Madrid’s Municipal Transport Company has purchased fifteen 12-meter buses, each with a 376 kWh battery pack, as well as fifteen 100 Kw chargers for night charging in depots. These will be the first 100% electric buses in the city’s fleet. They are scheduled to be delivered in December, and will operate on several lines in the city.

Barcelona Metropolitan Transport has ordered four 18.73-meter articulated buses, the first phase of a project to transform the city’s H16 line to a 100% electric route. The new buses will enter service in June 2018, joining two 12-metre e-buses which have been operating in the city since 2014. Irizar will install an opportunity charging station (made by Jema) to charge the buses throughout the day.

The company has also recently sold electric buses to the cities of San Sebastian, Bilbao and Valencia. Irizar electric buses have been operating in various European countries since 2014.
