The new EV’s combined rating of 105 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe) edges out the Nissan Leaf by 6 miles.
Upcoming models that will use Panasonic cells include the Fusion and C-Max hybrids, as well as the Fusion Energi and C-Max Energi PHEVs.
Ford holds nearly 500 patents for various hybrid-engine related technologies, and it plans on putting them to good use.
The Stanford team’s system can transfer 10 kW of power over a distance of 6.5 feet – enough to charge a car moving at highway speeds – and has an efficiency of 97 percent.
The plug-in hybrid model is called the Fusion Energi, and it will have a 1.6-liter gas engine, a lithium ion battery pack, and a fuel efficiency rating of more than 100 MPGe.
