San Diego Gas & Electric to invest in EV education along with charging station initiative

San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) plans to invest $7.5 million over the next five years in an education campaign to complement its recently approved $45-million charging station pilot.

SDG&E will be installing 3,500 charging stations at 350 local businesses and apartment communities. At least 10% of the chargers will be in disadvantaged neighborhoods.

The education campaign will include EV ride-and-drive events at various locations throughout SDG&E’s service area, where customers will be able to test-drive EVs from the major automakers. The campaign will also provide funding to community groups to promote EVs.

These companies do not seem to realise that the most likely mass installation of driverless cars is as part of completely driverless zones. The vehicles will not then be individually owned but hired by the trip from approved companies such as DHL and UHYR. The vehicles will be recharged between trips by those companies at convenient locations but those locations are unlikely to be ones that match the present pattern of use.

For instance they are unlikely to route their vehicles into basements of blocks of flats.
