Jaguar Land Rover and BMW will partner to develop next generation electric motors. The partnership will include joint investment in R&D, engineering, and procurement.

Engineers from both companies will work to develop the fifth generation of BMW’s eDrive technology, which contains the electric motor, transmission, and power electronics in a single housing, and does not require rare earth metals.

The partnership is designed to be more cost-efficient by sharing development and production planning costs, as well as economies of scale from joint purchasing, while supporting a transition to autonomous, connected, electric, and shared (ACES) vehicles.

Nick Rogers, Jaguar Land Rover Engineering Director, said, “The transition to ACES represents the greatest technological shift in the automotive industry in a generation. The pace of change and consumer interest in electrified vehicles is gathering real momentum and it’s essential we work across industry to advance the technologies required to deliver this exciting future.”
