Austria’s Kreisel Electric to partner with Germany’s CustomCells on battery design

CustomCells, a German battery cell manufacturer, has announced a partnership with Kreisel Electric, an Austrian company specializing in the development of battery systems. The two plan to develop two new cell designs as part of the partnership.

Kreisel has been majority-owned by John Deere since 2021, and is based in Rainbach, Austria. It develops battery-integrated charging infrastructure and high-performance batteries for off-highway and marine applications.

The two companies will “develop two customized cell designs: one with extremely high energy density and another with an optimized total cost structure.” They will consider factors such as format, cell design and chemistry to optimize cells.

To reach this point, the companies said they will examine global supply chain considerations, material availability, technical and commercial risks and the Technology Readiness Level—a measure used by government agencies to assess a technology’s maturity. Also, CustomCells plans to develop forecasts of the electrochemical performance and assess the electrochemical and thermal stability of the cell designs, and to undertake a risk analysis of cell development and mass production.

CustomCells noted that its work in battery development with Kreisel is being influenced by new and developing markets, including that for off-highway electric vehicles.

“Niche markets, such as off-highway vehicles, are increasingly gaining attention—and CustomCells is in the pole position to lead in this area,” said Dirk Abendroth, CEO of the Schleswig-Holstein-based concern.
