For those who were wondering whether Porsche buyers would embrace an electric car, here’s your answer: last quarter, sales of the new Taycan EV were only a hair below sales of the iconic 911 model.
Porsche delivered 9,072 Taycans during the first quarter of 2021, trailing the 911 by 61 units. Porsche unveiled the Taycan, which many consider to be the first viable competitor to Tesla’s Model S, in 2019.
Before concluding that Porsche is ditching gasoline for electrons, however, note that the Taycan still represents only a fraction of the brand’s total sales. Porsche’s total global deliveries rose to 71,986 vehicles in the first quarter, and its two best-selling models were the Macan and Cayenne SUVs.
Porsche plans to launch an electric version of the Macan next year, based on a new EV platform co-developed with sister brand Audi.
