Emporia’s new Pro Level 2 EV charger features built-in load management

Emporia Energy has launched the new Emporia Pro, “a meticulously engineered Level 2 EV charger.” The Emporia Pro’s intelligent system is designed to optimize the use of a building’s available electrical power, reducing the need for panel upgrades.

According to Emporia, nearly 50% of all US households face expensive electrical panel upgrades—often costing thousands of dollars—in order to install a standard Level 2 EV charger (7-11 kW). Many older homes have 100 A service (insufficient for adding EV charging to the existing loads), and some simply have electrical panels that are maxed out, and have no capacity for additional circuits.

Emporia’s Pro Level 2 EV charger features the company’s PowerSmart Load Management technology, which intelligently monitors available power through the Vue Home Energy Monitor, installed in the electrical panel. PowerSmart uses real-time data from the Vue to dynamically adjust charging rates as other household appliances turn on and off throughout the day, ensuring that vehicles charge at the maximum safe rate without exceeding the panel’s capacity.

The Emporia Pro comes with a J1772 connector (a Tesla NACS connector is coming soon) and can be hard-wired into the electrical system or installed using a NEMA 14-0 outlet. It delivers up to 48 amps with a hardwire installation or 40 amps when plugged into an outlet.

The Emporia Pro is UL-certified, ENERGY STAR rated, and NEMA 4 rated, and can be installed indoors or out. It comes with a 25-foot charging cord, a wall-mounted cable management holder, and a three-year warranty.

The Emporia Pro Smart EV Charger is available for $599.

“EV adoption continues to accelerate, but the infrastructure challenges remain significant,” said Shawn McLaughlin, CEO at Emporia. “For many years now, consumers have been shell-shocked by the surprise that they have to spend thousands of dollars upgrading their electrical panel to access Level 2 charging. The Pro’s intelligent energy management puts an end to this, and is a game-changer for both convenience and cost savings.”

“This isn’t just about the convenience of at-home EV charging; it’s empowering homeowners to take control of their energy usage and save money on their utility bills,” said Ben Thacker, Business Development and Strategic Partnerships at Emporia.
