There are several “luxury” EVs on the market or in the pipeline, but this concept car from Daimler takes automotive indulgence to a new level. The Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 coupé, which was introduced at the recent Monterey Car Week, was designed as an EV, with styling that recalls the aero coupés of a bygone affluent age.
Almost 18 feet long, the massive motorcar features gullwing doors, a “boat tail” that recalls a luxury yacht, and a set of two custom suitcases that fit into the front luggage area. The windscreen features a heads-up display, and sensors embedded in the upholstery detect the color of the occupants’ clothing in order to trigger appropriate interior lighting effects.
Four permanent magnet synchronous electric motors deliver all-wheel drive and total output of 550 kW (750 hp). The shallow underfloor battery has a usable capacity of approximately 80 kWh for a range of over 200 miles (EPA). 0-60 acceleration is under four seconds.
The super-coupé includes CCS DC fast charging at levels up to 350 kW, as well as wireless charging.
“Our glamorous coupé, the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6, represents the ultimate in contemporary luxury. It is hot and cool,” states Gorden Wagener, Head of Design at Daimler AG. “With its intelligent appeal and reduced, technoid look, it perfectly embodies our design philosophy of sensual purity and our pursuit of aerodynamic efficiency.”
