Will 2022 be the year of the electric pickup truck? Startup Rivian snatched the first-mover advantage with its impressive R1T, and Ford recently grabbed some headlines with the announcement that demand for its upcoming F-150 Lightning has been far greater than anticipated. Hope springs eternal that Tesla’s unorthodox Cybertruck will hit the road sometime in 2022.

GM has fallen a bit behind in the truck race. Deliveries of the GMC HUMMER EV Pickup are expected to start soon, but this will be a high-dollar, low-volume model, and almost certainly the least-efficient EV ever built—not exactly what most EV enthusiasts have in mind when we speak of an electric pickup. Chevrolet’s electric Silverado pickup, which is to debut at the next CES in January, looks like more of a mainstream offering, but production won’t begin until early 2023.

Now GMC has offered a sneak peek at its upcoming electric Sierra pickup, which will be revealed next year, and will initially be available only in the popular Denali trim.

Few details are on offer, but we do now that, like the electric HUMMER and Silverado, the e-Sierra will be built as a native EV on the company’s new Ultium platform. It will be assembled at General Motors’ Factory ZERO Assembly Plant in Detroit and Hamtramck, Michigan.

“Sierra Denali holds tremendous equity for GMC and our customers,” said GMC VP Duncan Aldred. “We now have an opportunity to evolve Sierra’s capabilities and technologies, as afforded by transitioning to an all-electric propulsion while also elevating the luxurious design and comfort associated with Denali.”
