Australian company introduces all-electric sports car

Arcspeed Pty Limited has announced the release of a high-performance, all-electric, open-top sports car – the Arcspeed Sports. Several of the country’s most famous sports car builders collaborated on the new roadster, making it a showcase for Australian electric vehicle design and engineering.

The Sports features a Can-Am style body and a lithium phosphate battery pack that offers a range of up to 93 miles (an optional extra battery pack can be added to double the range). The AC motor, mounted in the middle of the car, delivers 522 Newton-meters of torque directly to the rear wheels (that means zero to 60 in 3.8 seconds, up there with a Porsche or Ferrari). The dashboard display is just as zippy, with a touch-screen control panel and an integrated, 3G-enabled Apple iPad or Tablet PC.

There’s no word yet on when this thunder from down under will be in dealerships, but the company is about to go into production with a limited number of units for local sale. A left-hand drive version will also be made for export markets. The price will be “less than half the price of other currently available electric sports cars.”
