McLaren Applied has selected STMicroelectronics as a key supplier of silicon carbide (SiC) power modules for its next-generation IPG5 800V inverter.
The next-generation IPG5 800V silicon carbide inverter can power electric motors to more than 400 kW peak, 250 kW continuous. It’s designed for automotive applications, and adheres to ISO 26262 ASIL-D standards.
The IPG5 is designed to be light and compact, at just 3.79 L in size and 5.5 kg. It is highly controllable, and offers variable switching frequencies. According to McLaren, the variability in switching frequency up to 32 kHz enables engineers to use a faster, more efficient and lightweight drivetrain.
“Silicon carbide and the need for greater efficiency is absolutely going to be a key trend in the increasing adoption of EV technology,” says Stephen Lambert, Head of Electrification at McLaren Applied. “Inverter technology is rapidly adopting silicon carbide semiconductors, especially in 800 V architectures, and this deal with ST secures access to the top-notch SiC semiconductor technology.”
