Greenlane’s flagship electric truck charging site uses ABB’s electrification and energy management tech

Greenlane Infrastructure, a joint venture formed by Daimler Truck North America, NextEra Energy Resources and Blackrock’s Global Infrastructure fund, has opened a new EV charging hub in Colton, California. Located at the convergence of Interstates 215 and 10, the site is designed specifically to serve medium- and heavy-duty electric trucks. It features a mix of 400 kW fast chargers and 180 kW chargers for overnight charging. At full build, it will feature over 50 chargers delivering up to 11.76 MW of combined power.

Delivering this much charging power is a complicated undertaking. Long utility lead times and the variable nature of EV load demand present grid management challenges. To navigate these, Greenlane partnered with electrical equipment giant ABB to implement a SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) system with microgrid controls, which ensures that the site operates within utility constraints, supports load balancing in real time, and enables remote monitoring of future Greenlane stations. This solution will also optimize the use of power from future on-site solar panels and battery energy storage.

ABB’s solution supports the integration of third-party data into a centralized cloud interface, providing data intelligence and full visibility into site operations. Greenlane is able to respond quickly to any potential faults by remotely opening and closing all low- and medium-voltage circuit breakers.

The technology stack also includes ABB’s SACE Emax 2 circuit breakers for granular power monitoring, plus rugged Elastimold medium-voltage switchgear. Together, these tools equip Greenlane with real-time insights, automated protection, and modular flexibility for future growth in utility power and to support the introduction of megawatt EV charging.

Additional charging sites are slated for Barstow and Baker, strategically spaced to enable seamless EV operations across the I-15 corridor.
