The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), Boston’s public transportation agency, has awarded bus manufacturer New Flyer a contract for five Xcelsior CHARGE heavy-duty battery-electric buses.
The contract, which also includes charging infrastructure, is supported by a grant through the Federal Transit Administration’s (FTA) Low and No Emission Vehicle Deployment Program. New Flyer’s 60-foot battery-electric transit bus has completed the FTA’s Model Bus Testing Program, qualifying it for FTA funding.
MBTA will use the Xcelsior CHARGE buses on Silver Line routes.
New Flyer President Chris Stoddart said, “Our zero-emission buses will help MBTA to not only reduce emissions in the Greater Boston area, but also deliver industry-leading passenger capacity to move the community with clean, efficient transportation.”
