UK charging provider offers free TOU charging powered by renewable energy

The UK is generating an increasing amount of its electricity from renewable sources, but, depending on the day-to-day relationship between supply and demand, some of that energy goes to waste. Why not allow EV owners to take advantage of some of that “excess energy?”

That’s the premise of a new service from clean power company Good Energy and ZapMap, a UK-wide map of charging points. When excess clean energy is available, participating EV drivers will receive a notification, 24 hours in advance, about a four-hour Flash window in which charging will be free.

The arrangement is basically a time-of-use tariff, like those offered by many utilities, except that the energy will be free, and will come from 100% renewable sources. The project, which will initially be launched in a beta phase, will be enabled by smart EV chargers and an updated app provided by Good Energy.

The flash periods will vary by day. The Summer Flash Period will run from April to September between 11 am and 3 pm, and the Winter Flash Period will run from October to March between 11 pm and 3 am.

“Britain generates so much renewable electricity, it only makes sense for us all to take advantage of this free resource,” said Good Energy CEO Juliet Davenport. “The new Flash tariff will offer people the chance to benefit from free, green power when the wind and sun are strongest. Electric vehicle drivers are already doing their bit for the climate—here’s a chance for them to go one step further and support a truly clean energy grid.”

“The UK now has close to 500,000 plug-in vehicles on the road. This innovative tariff is supporting this seismic shift by offering drivers a cheaper and greener way of charging their vehicle,” said ZapMap cofounder Melanie Shufflebotham.
