Samsung SDI to be Rivian’s battery cell supplier

Samsung SDI High-performance 18650 battery

EV startup Rivian has announced that South Korean battery giant Samsung SDI will supply cells for its vehicles. The automaker, which plans to begin production of an electric pickup and an SUV this year, has been working with Samsung throughout the process of developing the new cells.

Rivian’s vehicles are aimed at the outdoorsy set, so it has developed its battery module and pack with challenging use cases in mind. The company has engineered its battery management system to intelligently respond to how a vehicle is being operated or charged, and has done extensive cell characterization testing across a wide range of operating conditions, in order to enable the BMS algorithms to optimize the performance and life of the pack.

Rivian has raised $8 billion since the start of 2019, and hopes to launch an initial public offering this September.

“We’re excited about the performance and reliability of Samsung SDI battery cells combined with our energy-dense module and pack design. Samsung SDI’s focus on innovation and responsible sourcing of battery materials aligns well with our vision,” said Rivian CEO RJ Scaringe.
