PlugShare, the maker of a popular charging station locator app, has teamed up with solar energy provider Sungevity to offer a free home charging station, including installation, with the purchase of a rooftop solar system.

The Drive Solar program offers qualified customers in the San Francisco Bay Area a 7.2 kW GE WattStation, which can deliver up to 20 miles of range per hour of charging.

As the two companies point out, the total cost of installing a home charging station can cost upwards of $2,100. Installing the charging station at the same time as the solar installation is more efficient, allowing Drive Solar to absorb some of these costs, and making things more convenient for the homeowner.

According to a PlugInsights Research analysis of over 6000 drivers, 19% of all PEV drivers who bought or leased their vehicles in 2014 or earlier also had home PV solar installations – a much higher proportion than the national average, which is below 1%.
