Mercedes-Benz launches electric bus chassis for Brazilian market

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled a new electric bus chassis developed for the Brazilian market. The eO500U chassis will be launched in 2022 for Brazil and Latin America, and will also be commercialized in Europe and Oceania.

The new chassis was developed by Mercedes’s Brazilian engineering team, and has been extensively tested in Germany. It is a 4×2 standard model that can accommodate low-floor bus bodies up to 13.2 meters long. It can deliver a range of up to 250 km (155 miles).

The eO500U features an electric motor integrated to the rear axle, and will come equipped with the EBS electronic brake and energy regeneration system. The batteries are charged via plug-in cables.

“We have allocated about 100 million Brazilian reais (16 million euros) to the eO500U project,” says Karl Deppen, President of Mercedes-Benz do Brasil and CEO Latin America. “Mercedes-Benz do Brasil is Daimler’s Worldwide Competence Center for the development of the brand’s bus chassis. This means that we have a solid expertise in this vehicle segment.”

“More than launching a new product in Brazil, the electric bus chassis represents a new step for the company towards an ecosystem that also includes exclusive services dedicated to electric vehicles,” says Roberto Leoncini, Mercedes-Benz do Brasil VP of Sales and Marketing for Trucks and Buses.

The range of services will include a specialized consultancy for public transport managers regarding vehicle operation, energy supply, charging infrastructure and fleet management for electric buses.
