Two British companies have an ambitious plan to create a network of 10,000 public EV charging stations across the UK. Charging manufacturer Elektromotive JV Ltd. and Charge Your Car (North) Ltd. have announced a new joint venture that will include the existing Charge Your Car network of 400 public chargers, mostly located in the Northeast of England, and Elektromotive’s existing 3,000 charge points, as well as other regional networks and stand-alone units.

The national network will be open source – charge points produced by any manufacturer can be included on the network, provided they use the industry-standard Open Charge Point Protocol.

EV drivers will be able to gain access to chargers across the UK, without the need to pay for a monthly subscription, and will be able to locate and pay for the use of any Charge Your Car charge point using a smartphone. Charging station owners who join the network will benefit from shared branding and promotion, as well as integrated billing, management and reporting facilities.
