FedEx has received its first 150 electric delivery vehicles from BrightDrop, GM’s new commercial EV brand. The first 150 BrightDrop Zevo 600s were delivered throughout Southern California to FedEx Express.
Powered by the Ultium battery platform, the Zevo 600 is designed for last-mile deliveries. GM says the Zevo 600’s time to market has been the fastest in the company’s history.
FedEx has already installed more than 500 charging stations in California, and continues to build out charging infrastructure across its vast network of facilities. The company is actively working with utilities to evaluate the grid capacity needed to support its charging infrastructure, and is investing to expand on-site generation and procurement of renewable energy at its facilities.
FedEx plans to take delivery of 2,500 Zevo 600s over the next few years. The delivery giant plans to transform its entire parcel pickup and delivery (PUD) fleet to EVs by 2040 (for the company’s sake, we hope it manages to complete the transition well before that date).
“At FedEx, we have ambitious [sic] sustainability goals, and our phased approach to vehicle electrification is a crucial part of our roadmap to achieve carbon-neutral global operations,” said FedEx Chief Sustainability Officer Mitch Jackson. “In just under six months, we’ve taken delivery of 150 BrightDrop Zevo 600s. In today’s climate of chip shortages and supply chain issues, that’s no ordinary feat.”
“Our Zevo 600 has been a record-setting vehicle from the start,” said Travis Katz, CEO of BrightDrop. “From a record-setting time to market to delivering one of the largest fleets of electric delivery vans on the road today, BrightDrop is showing the world what sustainable delivery looks like.”
