Assessing Li-ion cells with computed tomography and high-resolution 3D X-ray microscopes (Webinar)

In the last three decades, significant progress has been made on lithium-based battery technologies. However, lithium-ion battery cell manufacturers still face quality and process control challenges when trying to non-destructively map the battery electrodes’ microstructure, its heterogeneities, and their effect on battery aging and performance.

This webinar session at our Spring Virtual Conference on EV Engineering, presented by ZEISS Industrial Quality Solutions, introduces workflows that combine high-resolution X-ray microscopy and computed tomography to generate detailed three-dimensional visualization of the inside of lithium-ion batteries, without destroying them, to enable the study of their internal structure before and after charging/discharging cycles. These workflows can speed up development time, increase cost-effectiveness, and simplify failure analysis and quality inspection of lithium-ion batteries and other cells built with new emerging energy materials.

Safe Battery Systems: Innovative Materials As A Key Factor For Battery Systems

Passenger safety is key to the mass adoption of EVs. Therefore, high demands are placed on the battery system today and in the future. Materials, for example for Thermal Propagation Prevention, are unavoidable.

The short-term goal here is to maximise the evacuation time of the vehicle occupants in the event of a battery fire. The long-term goal is to prevent the onset and propagation of the battery fire in the first place.

For this purpose, requirement-specific materials must be developed, material application processes implemented and examined in an application-oriented test scenario under conditions that are as realistic as possible.

In this webinar, presented by Henkel, we will present material solutions for Thermal Propagation Prevention, explain the developed application processes, and provide an overview of test methods.
