Madrid’s Municipal Transport Company (Empresa Municipal de Transportes, or EMT) has placed a fifth order for electric buses with Spanish OEM Irizar. The latest order is for 90 buses, and will bring the number of Irizar e-buses in EMT Madrid’s fleet to 175.
The latest generation of Irizar’s ie electric bus is equipped with a 430 kWh battery from Irizar and a 206 kW traction motor. The buses can be charged using an inverted pantograph or a Combo 2 charger connector. The 12-meter Irizar ie has two doors, 28 passenger seats and two wheelchair areas.
EMT Madrid conducted tests to measure the range and efficiency of the buses before awarding the tender, and the Irizar ie got record results, exceeding 350 km of range.
“The EMT has been electrifying their fleet for several years,” said Carlos Sierra, Director of Transport Service at EMT Madrid. “Irizar e-mobility has been by our side during the process of technological transformation and that will make it possible to [make] 25% of our fleet electric in 2025.”
