This week, Nissan announced the launch of its LEAF to Home power supply system, which, together with Nichicon’s EV Power Station charger, enables vehicle-to-home and vehicle-to-grid applications. Nissan will showcase the new system at Japanese showrooms beginning in June (there’s no word yet on when it might be available in Europe or the US).

The EV Power Station is about the size of an external AC unit, conforms to the CHAdeMO protocol, and can fully charge a LEAF in as little as four hours. It features a timer function that can be controlled with a touch panel, and stores or supplies electricity automatically to help balance the electrical supply system. It can lower a consumer’s electricity bill by charging an EV with electricity generated during the night, when demand is low, and supplying electricity to the grid during peak demand periods. It can also be used as a back-up power source in case of outages. A LEAF’s battery pack holds about 24kWh of electricity, which can power an average Japanese household for about two days.
