Installing EV charging infrastructure can be a challenge for residents of apartments or condominiums, but it’s a challenge that urgently needs to be addressed, as millions of people live in multi-unit dwellings, not only in US cities, but also in hot EV markets such as Europe and China.

Network operator ChargePoint is working with residential communities around the US to make it easier for apartment complexes and condo homeowner associations to accommodate requests for EV charging. The company already has charging stations at residential communities in 30 states and provinces, and its installations at multi-unit dwellings have nearly doubled in the last year.

Residential community Rockwell, located in the Pacific Heights neighborhood of San Francisco, has installed a unique combination of 30 stacked parking spots featuring EV charging stations. The chargers move along with the stacked parking system, and ChargePoint’s energy management features have enabled Rockwell to support more charging spots while saving on electrical infrastructure costs.

“ChargePoint was instrumental in bringing the convenience of EV charging to our residents at Rockwell,” said Michael McCone, Vice President at Oyster Development Corporation. “We needed a partner to help integrate EV charging with stacked parking. ChargePoint worked quickly with our contractor and the building department. ChargePoint’s simple software and proactive support have made it easy to implement charging and manage electrical capacity to control costs.”

Aventino in Los Gatos has found that charging is a valuable amenity for its residents. “I’m renewing my lease at Aventino, and a big reason for that is the availability of EV charging,” said Tesla owner Hector Morales. “When I looked around for properties, there weren’t many with EV charging. Now that I have convenient charging at home, I can’t imagine not having it.”
