Toyota has unveiled its third-generation fuel cell system, known as the 3rd Gen FC System, “part of its continued efforts toward the realization of a hydrogen society.”
Toyota said that its new generation of hydrogen fuel cell systems is smaller and lighter than its previous line. It is also twice as durable. “The all-new 3rd Gen FC System is designed to meet the particular needs of the commercial sector with the same durability as conventional diesel-powered engines,” the company said.

In 2014, Toyota launched the Mirai fuel cell electric vehicle and has since sold approximately 28,000 Mirai sedans in some 30 countries and territories. (For comparison, Toyota sold over 51,000 units of its bZ4X battery-electric crossover in 2024 alone.) In 2019 Toyota launched fuel cell systems for use in other applications, including buses, railroads and stationary power generation.
The new fuel cell system will become available in major markets including Japan, Europe, North America and China after 2026, Toyota said.
