BYD delivers over 70,000 electric buses—almost all in China

Since introducing battery-electric buses over a decade ago, automaker BYD has delivered over 70,000 units to customers worldwide. BYD says its e-buses have covered over 3.4 billion miles, and reduced CO2 emissions by 3.8 million tons.

The vast majority of these are operating in China, but Europe is a growth area. BYD has delivered over 1,800 electric buses to around 100 European cities in 20 countries. The company first exhibited an electric bus at Europe’s BusWorld trade show in 2011. BYD continues to expand its electric bus factory in Hungary, where the annual output of a single shift is now 400 units.

BYD also builds e-buses at a factory in California, where production began in 2014. The company didn’t announce the number of e-buses it has sold in the electrically-challenged US, but it’s a handful compared to Europe and China.

BYD offers a range of electric buses, from a 28-foot model to a 60-foot articulated model to double-decker buses for the UK market. The company produces its own powertrain system, battery, motors, and motor control system.

Buses are actually just a small part of BYD’s EV lineup—it also produces electric trucks, vans and cars. The company delivered over 600,000 “new energy vehicles” in 2021 alone, and has delivered over 1.5 million in total.

“BYD launched its strategy for public transport electrification back in 2010, realizing the need for change in the way the world relied so heavily on fossil fuels,” said Isbrand Ho, General Manager, Commercial Vehicle Business Centre of BYD Europe. “At the heart of this has been our ongoing research and development in cutting-edge battery and electronic technologies, which has been pivotal to us sharing our knowledge and engaging in many successful partnerships around the world.”
