New Flyer introduces Xcelsior CHARGE H2 fuel cell bus

Bus manufacturer New Flyer has announced the Xcelsior CHARGE H2, a new hydrogen fuel cell heavy-duty bus. The bus comes in 40-foot and 60-foot models, both of which have completed the Federal Transit Administration’s Model Bus Testing program in Altoona, Pennsylvania.

The CHARGE H2 will have a range of up to 300 miles, with a refueling time of 6-20 minutes. New Flyer is currently delivering 25 of the buses to three transit agencies in California.

The Xcelsior CHARGE H2 complements the Xcelsior CHARGE electric bus introduced by New Flyer in 2017. The CHARGE H2 rounds out New Flyer’s portfolio to include trolley buses, battery-powered buses, and fuel cell buses.

“With the addition of the Xcelsior CHARGE H2, New Flyer proudly offers a robust line-up of zero-emission transit buses to assist in the transition to clean transit, to serve the evolving needs of communities, and to meet increasingly stringent greenhouse gas emissions regulation such as California’s Innovative Clean Transit Rule,” said Chris Stoddart, President of New Flyer. “We anticipate fuel cells for extended range will complement all battery-electric technology, not only in transit, but other industries such as commercial trucks.”
