Elon Musk: Tesla is in talks with other automakers about sharing the SuperCharger network (UPDATED)

Competing fast charging standards are a major impediment to electric road trips. If Tesla’s vast Supercharger network could be used by other automakers’ EVs, it would do much to remove this roadblock. Elon Musk has discussed this possibility in the past, and at a recent press conference in Germany, he hinted that it may soon… Read more »

Tesla: cost of providing Supercharging “immaterial”

Stock-market pundits are all over the map when it comes to Tesla. One recently predicted that the EV-builder’s stock price is poised to double, thanks mostly to a new Uber-like business that, so far, exists only in said pundit’s writings. Another insists TSLA is heading for a crash, claiming that the company loses money on… Read more »

Tesla Superchargers may be too popular for their own good

Giving away free stuff can be a winning business strategy, but it can backfire if customers start gaming the system. At Tesla’s recent shareholders’ meeting, Elon Musk complained that some Model S owners living near the company’s free Superchargers are using them to charge up for everyday driving, rather than for road trips as Tesla… Read more »

Tesla’s liquid-cooled Supercharger cable could enable faster charge times

Once again, Tesla has come up with an innovation that could be far more significant than is apparent at first glance. Speaking at the latest shareholders’ meeting, Elon Musk said that Tesla has “just introduced” a liquid-cooled cable to the Supercharger system (around 24 minutes into the video below). Liquid cooling allows the cable to… Read more »

Tesla to adapt to Chinese charging standards – as soon as they exist

Tesla has announced that it will fully support China’s charging standards, modifying its vehicles to ensure that they are compatible. This is surely a wise and necessary policy, as concerns about charging infrastructure are widely considered to be the main reason that EV sales in the world’s largest auto market have been slow to take… Read more »

Does Tesla’s latest software update really end range anxiety?

The buildup was pretty big: earlier this week, Elon Musk’s tweeted that an upcoming software update for Model S would “end range anxiety.” The reality – announced at a press conference today – is neat, but perhaps not quite so game-changing. Software version 6.2, which is expected to be enabled in the next 10 days,… Read more »

Tesla goes to China: charging is a genuine challenge

It’s no secret that Tesla’s sales in China are materializing more slowly than expected (and no surprise – China has proven a tough nut to crack for many Western firms). Elon Musk acknowledged the difficulties in February, but as always, put a brave face on things: “Things were a little weaker in China because of… Read more »

Tesla Q4 earnings: still in the red, but great things coming soon

Tesla’s earnings report for the 4th quarter of 2014 followed the usual pattern: there’s plenty of good news, but the company is still operating at a loss; Elon Musk dropped his customary vague hint of more wondrous goodies to come in the future; and the stock market reacted in its usual way – TSLA shares… Read more »

As DC fast chargers multiply, so do standards

Public DC fast-charging stations are proliferating around the world at what some might call an alarming rate. In at least 50 countries, EV drivers can top up their batteries in the time it takes to (leisurely) enjoy a cup of tea, or whatever the local beverage may be. While automakers agree on the importance of… Read more »

Tesla partners with Chinese wireless carrier to deploy 400 charging stations

Tesla has announced a partnership with China Unicom, China’s second-largest wireless carrier, to build public charging stations across the country. The two companies will install charging posts at 400 Unicom stores in 120 cities, with Tesla supplying equipment and Unicom providing the land, said Tesla spokeswoman Peggy Yang. Tesla will also deploy Superchargers in 20… Read more »
