HPEV is a company based in Wesley Chapel, Florida, with a mission to allow any vehicle to be converted to a plug-in hybrid. It’s developing what it calls a “parallel hybrid load assist retrofit package,” which it plans to demonstrate on a Ford 350 class 3 truck later this year. HPEV’s target customers are truck fleet operators and automobile dealerships.

HPEV’s system uses a traction motor attached to the rear axle of a vehicle. The conversion process involves replacing the rear axle, leaving the engine and transmission untouched, and is designed to be completed in as little as 80 person/hours. The company has a patented technology that it says can cool a motor without using pumps or moving parts, increasing efficiency and reducing heat-related failures.

Tim Hassett, HPEV's CEO, commented, "We are seeing a lot of traction and demand in the commercial fleet market as well as the retail vehicle market. We expect great things to come from this product category in 2012 and beyond."
