GM to build electric Silverado pickup at Factory Zero in Detroit

Chevrolet’s upcoming Silverado electric pickup truck will be built at the company’s Factory Zero assembly plant (the former Detroit-Hamtramck Assembly Center, now retooled for the exclusive production of battery-electric vehicles).

GM plans to deliver more than 1 million electric vehicles globally by 2025. Thanks to its new Ultium Platform, along with modern virtual development tools and technology, the company says it has reduced vehicle development times by nearly 50 percent, to just 26 months.

The Chevrolet Silverado electric full-size pickup is designed from the ground up as an EV. GM estimates the range at more than 400 miles. Retail and fleet versions will offer customers a variety of options.

Factory Zero, named for GM’s vision of a future with zero crashes, zero emissions and zero congestion, will be the launchpad for the automaker’s multi-brand EV strategy. The GMC HUMMER EV pickup and the Cruise Origin, a purpose-built electric self-driving vehicle, will also be built at Factory Zero.

Factory Zero is undergoing a complete renovation and retooling—the paint and body shops and general assembly area are getting comprehensive upgrades, including new machines, conveyors, controls and tooling. The plant has been expanded to over 4.5 million square feet.

GM is also investing $2 billion in its Spring Hill, Tennessee assembly plant, which will become the company’s third EV manufacturing site, together with Factory Zero and Orion Assembly.

Ultium Cells, a joint venture with LG Energy Solutions, will mass-produce battery cells at a $2.3-billion facility in Lordstown, Ohio. Construction of the new plant is well underway.

“The vehicles coming from Factory Zero will change the world, and how the world views electric vehicles,” said GM President Mark Reuss. “Chevrolet will take everything Chevy’s loyal truck buyers love about Silverado—and more—and put it into an electric pickup that will delight retail and commercial customers alike.”
