Li-S Energy and Janus Electric to develop lithium-sulfur cells for swappable battery packs

Australian battery specialists Li-S Energy and Janus Electric are working together to develop lithium-sulfur and/or lithium metal battery cells for Janus’s swappable battery packs. Janus Electric offers products for converting heavy diesel trucks to EVs, based on an exchangeable battery system. Li-S Energy’s lithium-sulfur cells feature a cathode made of sulfur, carbon, a nanomaterial called Boron Nitride Nanotubes (BNNT), and the company’s proprietary Li-Nanomesh. BNNT is added to the cathode to help stabilize and protect it, and Li-Nanomesh is added to the anode to reduce dendrite formation.

This Prime Mover was converted by Janus Electric and is operating with a Janus Electric Motor and exchangeable 600 KWh battery pack.

Janus’s current battery packs feature lithium-ion cells. By replacing them with Li-S Energy’s lithium-sulfur cells, the companies hope to increase range and reduce pack weight. According to Li-S Energy, Janus Electric “intends to progressively phase out lithium-ion cells and purchase Li-S Energy cells to meet its projected requirements of 495,000 cells (total capacity 247.5 MWh) by the end of 2023” if testing and supply of the cells are successful.
