Mitsubishi i scores first place in fuel economy

The EPA’s annual Fuel Economy Guide has rated the 2012 Mitsubishi i-MiEV the most fuel-efficient car on the road.

The EPA’s annual Fuel Economy Guide has rated the 2012 Mitsubishi i-MiEV the most fuel-efficient car on the road. The 5-door subcompact scored 112 combined/126 city/99 highway MPGe (Miles Per Gallon equivalent).

The little i blew away the Leaf (99 combined MPGe), vaporized the Volt (60) and more than doubled the score of the venerable Prius hybrid (50). It’s been selling briskly in several European countries – US sales are supposed to begin in January at a little less than $30k apiece.

Yoichi Yokozawa, CEO of Mitsubishi Motors North America, was a happy man. “With 17,000 i-MiEV -based units produced for various international markets, we look forward to providing North American consumers with an exceptionally well-engineered electric vehicle that has proven itself to be reliable, safe, efficient and very affordable in overall price and cost of operation.”
